Perfect group weekend getaway / relaxed party venue

I had spent several weeks looking for a venue to host my partners surprise 30th Birthday party when I stumbled across The Gothic Church in East Horrington – it was literally everything I wanted and more – in a quiet rural location, a short drive from Bath, sleeps up to 17 in proper beds (no bunk-beds!), self-catered, character property, beautiful, wood burner & hot tub and it was available! It ticked every box.

It was such a pleasure arranging our stay with the owner, from the outset he was friendly and accommodating. He was quick to answer any queries we had and he even allowed us to check in early on the first day.

Without going to view the property first (something I have never done before), I took the plunge and booked it and I’m so, so glad I did! On arrival, it was an amazing surprise both for me and my partner. It is a truly beautiful venue, the conversion of the church has been masterfully done, making the very best of all it’s beautiful features, particularly the original stained glass windows and high ceilings.

All the bedrooms are a lovely size, and the kitchen is huge and well equipped, the living room with its fire burner is so cosy and inviting and the decked garden was the perfect outside entertaining space for our BBQ on the Saturday night; it even accommodated a 9×6 gazebo that we brought with us in case it rained.

The hot tub was the icing on the cake, especially for the Birthday Boy!

11 of us stayed in total (down from 12 originally) but there was more than enough room – everyone in the party loved the venue, several exclaiming that they wanted to live there and everyone agreed that they would like to stay again.

I would very much recommend the Gothic Church to anyone looking for something beautiful and unique for their venue, whatever the occasion. In fact I have already had a few people ask about it from the pictures I posted on Facebook!

Our party had a such a lovely relaxed time, which was very much needed all round and although we only stayed for two nights, it felt like we had been away for a week.  My partner said that he could not have imagined a more perfect place to spend his 30th, which really sums it all up. We hope to be back again soon!

What a find this was… we cannot recommend James’s converted church enough!

It’s a beautiful, unique property with lots of large and interesting entertaining spaces – a huge modern kitchen/diner, a gorgeous mezzanine formal dining area with large stained glass windows as a back drop, a large lounge with a wood burner and a huge, impressive entrance hall which really gives it the wow factor. Not to mention the lovely decked area outside with an inviting hot tub!

We were a hen do of 18 girls and had been let down at the last minute by a converted barn owner in Lacock, so James literally saved our weekend! We only had a few days until the big weekend to rearrange everything and James was away, but was super helpful and responsive answering all of our questions and requirements, even sorting a local friend to be on hand to meet us at check in and check out to ensure everything was ok. Everyone loved the venue and the bride-to-be had a very special hen weekend.

The property is only about half an hour from Bath so most of our party got trains direct from London, and we arranged a local minibus company to take us in and out of Bath for a night out on the Saturday night which was great fun! The church itself is in a tiny village, fairly remote with plenty of gorgeous countryside around for long walks. We had a couple of our party with cars which helped and had a food order delivered from Sainsbury’s for the afternoon we arrived which worked well.

We couldn’t believe our luck that we found such a stunning venue at such short notice, thank you so much James for being a wonderful host, we will definitely be back!
