Helpful rules and tips

We are delighted to welcome you to the Gothic Church and are committed to making your stay as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. Please remember this property is not a hotel but a private residence in a small village, so there are a few hints and rules we encourage you to observe for reasons of safety, insurance and neighbourly goodwill!

  • If you close all doors as you pass through them you will find the whole church stays beautifully warm and snug. However, should you need to alter the heating and hot water timings, the easiest way is just to click the heating or central heating buttons to “Boost” or “Off” – (these buttons are located on the panel next to the middle window in the kitchen.)
  • In the kitchen, in addition to the normal appliances you would expect to find, all of which are for your use, you will also find an iron, ironing board, hoover J and spare hairdryer should you need them.
  • Heating and Hot Water: The heating and hot water is on a timer, and is set to keep you comfortably warm during the daytime and evening. All fixed radiators have thermostats that are set comfortably to the mid-range numbers where they operate very efficiently.
  • The Glass Woodburning Stove: The fireplace in the Chancel Room is wonderful to use, but should be treated with care. Set the fire with firelighters and small bits of wood and keep the glass doors closed. You can regulate the heat with the various controls set within the iron body of the fire. Logs are to be found in the brown wooden chest against the wall. There is a further supply of logs outside the church in a green all-weather container if needed, just through the back garden gate. Please be careful at all times as this is real flame. Children must NEVER be left alone with the fire ablaze.

  • Shower Rooms: Check you have switched on the large switch on the wall outside both shower rooms before using.
  • Hot Tub: Outside is a charming private courtyard garden complete with indoor hot tub and seating area. The hot tub in the courtyard is set to 39 degrees and can be left on constantly during your stay. Please ensure that you replace the cover immediately you leave the hot tub. Otherwise it will lose heat quickly, even in sunshine, and your enjoyment will be reduced. Lastly, if a lot of water has been lost, please replace it with the garden hose, (tap just next to front garden gate) as the jacuzzi jets will malfunction if the jet nozzles are not well covered with water.
  • For insurance and safety reasons the hot tub must be closed between 9.00pm and 9.00am and only plastic glasses are to be used in the Spa area.
  • Please DO NOT touch the red button behind the hot-tub

  • Keys: Please remember to keep keys with you during your stay, and leave them with the caretaker when you check out. (If no caretaker is present, please leave them back where you found them when you checked in.) You will be given a code to a key safe outside the building. Any keys accidentally retained or lost will incur delays of repayment (or retention) of deposit monies.
  • Security: Please always double lock the door and make sure all windows are closed when the building is unoccupied. This precaution is for your security and maintaining the warmth in the building.
  • Recycling and Refuse The Gothic Church is a very eco-friendly building in a small village. Mendip Council  is very good at collecting recycled items and wheelie bins every Wednesday, (provided they are left outside the building!)
  • There are recycling crates for:

    • Food waste – Please put all food waste in the small BROWN and GREEN bins (with liners – provided) Please place ALL throwaway foodstuffs (leftovers, teabags, coffee powder, meat, bones – EVERYTHING can go in – INCLUDING and ESPECIALLY FAT!!!!) into the small bins on the windowsill above the sink, with a bio-degradable bin liner (provided). Then place these bins in the courtyard when you leave for collection.
    • Paper and cardboard – can go together in the same BLACK crate
    • Glass and bottles – can go together in the same BLUE crate
    • Aluminium and tin cans – can go together in the same GREEN crate
    • All other refuse – can go in black bin liners and into the wheelie bins in the car parking area.
    • Please leave your full recycling crates next to the wheelie bins in the car parking area when you leave. (If there is not enough room in the plastic crates provided, – sounds like one helluva party!! – you can use plastic bags to separate the recycled items as above and place them next to the crates in the courtyard when you leave). The Owner and villagers and the environment really appreciate your efforts to do this – thanks!
  • The Gothic Church has an eco-friendly septic tank for all kitchen drainage, bathroom and toilet waste. Therefore please make sure NO COOKING FAT OR MEAT FATS are tipped down the sink – not even a tiny bit! – and that all sanitary towels, make up tissues and wet-wipes are placed in the bins, not flushed down the toilets.
  • Please leave a note reporting any maintenance issues you have experienced e.g. light bulbs, cleanliness, fused appliances, breakages, etc. Our cleaning team spot most things anyway, but it is extremely helpful for us when our guests bring things to our attention – we always address them immediately and we want all our guests to have the best experience possible when they arrive.
  • Please remember that the graveyard which adjoins the church may be visited at any time by the public. It does not belong to the Gothic Church now, so feel free to sit quietly in it, and respect it as you would any other graveyard – it cannot be used for partying or picnicking, or for party purposes.

  • Noise: The stained glass windows in the gallery are very thin and ‘party noise’ in that space after 10.00pm carries right across the village so please ‘party on’ in the living room or kitchen after this time.
  • Please also remember to enter and exit the Church quietly, particularly if arriving in taxis/cars late at night.
  • Parking: If you arrive in more than three cars, for additional parking please use the grass verge 30 yards up the lane. Make sure you park all four wheels on the grass, as very wide farm machinery, dustcarts and fire engines pass every day and they may have to scratch your car (or shunt you) if you are blocking the road. Please tell all your guests this.

  • Fireworks: A local bye-law forbids the use of fireworks anywhere in the village.
  • Smoking: For safety and sociability please no smoking inside the Gothic Church.
  • Drains and Bathrooms: The church drainage is built following natural traditions with a sensitive and very efficient eco-septic tank located under the garden. Please do NOT put any Cooking Fats, Oils, Bleaches, Sanitary Towels, Wet Wipes, etc down the toilets OR the sinks as they will a) block the drains and b) destroy its eco-system!
  • Showers: Please be sensitive to keeping the shower curtains closed and mopping up pools of water from the floor, particularly upstairs as it will soon drip through into the kitchen otherwise!
